SATISH GUJRAL

Born in Jhelum, in Punjab in 1925, Satish Gujral spent his early years entombed in silence due to his impaired hearing. It was during this time when the artist explored Urdu literature and ventured into his imaginative journey of doodling with a pencil on paper. In 1939, the artist joined the Mayo School of Art in Lahore.

Gujral rejected the PAG’s brand of modernism, which was inspired by European sensibilities and techniques, and instead searched for a traditional identity. His recent works have been the result of a continuous search for his inner roots and internal reckoning. Even the themes have been taken from myths, folklore and history, in addition to the lives of people around him. Gujral used images from mythology and set them in the current realities.  The artist has experimented his oeuvre across diverse mediums such plastic art, graphics, paintings, sculptures, murals, object design and architecture.

Widely collected in India and abroad, the contemporary artist has been a recipient of multiple  awards such as Da Vinci Award for lifetime achievement from Mexico, Padma Vibhushan from Govt. of India  as well as honored with “Order of the Crown”, conferred by the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi.

The artist passed away on 26th March, 2020
