Ever since childhood days Nahid had a passion and thirst for art. Hence to acquire formal knowledge in fine arts, she did her BFA from JJ School of Arts, Mumbai in 1984. She participated in the ‘Monsoon Show 1981’ in Mumbai. Since then Merchant has been participating in several national as well as international art exhibitions. Another unique facet is that she is an internationally acclaimed fashion designer.

Nahid has always been a keen observer and a follower of designing in one form or the other. Along with her passion for painting, her zeal for good clothing has always been there. She defines designing as an amalgamation of line, form, color and texture. This is predominant in her works. She creates abstract compositions on a two dimensional surface which as a fashion designer she drapes on the human form to automatically get a third dimension. She creates unusual color combination and is known for her impressive way of blending colors on canvas which creates an impact of its own.
