BHARTTI VERMA

Born in 1987, Bhartti Verma is inspired by Delhi and its urban landscape. Reflecting on the constant cacophony of a city that rarely takes a pause, Verma often imagines what a silent city would look like. Her paintings depict spaces with objects such as a crown, a daguerreotype camera, or a chair, creating conjunctions in time and space. They are devoid of people, though their presence remains palpable through pertinently placed objects, indicative of the artist’s acute sensitivity to the world around her. While still in her graduate program, Verma’s interest in narrative art crisscrossed a surreal visual language, complicating our notions of the present through signs placed in the urban space. Verma further translates her childhood fascination with aerial views of buildings to create silent urban sanctuaries for herself and viewers to take refuge from the chaos of the world.

Bhartti Verma is a Delhi based artist, and received her MFA (2012) and her BFA (2010) from the Delhi College of Art, each with gold medal distinction.  Her signature is her control over scale, proportions and spatial dimensioning. Bhartti lives and works in a small apartment crammed in a narrow street that cannot contain the two wheelers, surge of humanity and office bound cars all competing and jostling for space. Her paintings are a withdrawal, a call for inner sanctity. She has exhibited in over multiple shows and received artistic awards. Her work is held in private collections globally.

The artist lives and works out of New Delhi, India.
