Asma is a self taught artist. Before 2012 her curriculum vitae did not include art, and mainly read – CRMS, Zoology, Business Strategy, Real Estate, and Analytics. Asma has a BSc In Zoology, a diploma in software engineering, and a MBA in marketing. She has a Six Sigma green belt certification, and worked at the Analytics Centre Of Excellence while at GE card services, Bangalore. She has also worked on Tenant Strategies & Solutions while at Cushman & Wakefield, Bombay. Reflections of these many journeys can be seen in her art through her science journal drawings inspired biomorphic forms, and repeating themes of finding patterns, & order in chaos.
Asma’s mode of expression in her constantly evolving work swings from surrealism to sculptural mixed media works, fantastical assemblages, and repetitive illustrative patterns. Her work has a touch of whimsy, is hyperactive, surreal and brings together seemingly abstract elements in a state of cohesiveness. She draws her inspiration from the popular sugary rainbow hued foods culture, and narratives of magic realism, chaos theory, organic ecosystems, quantum mechanics, natural history and parallel universes, amongst other things, that allow for a lateral view and infinite possibilities through themes of exploration, new discoveries, symbiotic associations and how a wee action, like the flap of a butterfly or the stroke of a brush on one side of the world could lead to a larger inconceivable impact on the other side.
Asma’s work is evocative, sometimes playful, influenced by tales from her childhood, time spent in Zoology class and inspirations drawn from following the breadcrumb trail of the everyday. It is a celebration of the ever evolving, and ever enchanted in life, alongside beautiful dilapidation.
